Arts and Crafts

Art Group

Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
There is no charge.

If you have a passion for painting and like to combine that with conversation with others; join this group to work with watercolors and acrylics. Members provide their own materials; the Jenks provides the meeting space. No sign-up necessary, walk-ins welcome!

Knitting Group

Alternating Mondays, 10:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
$1.00 per sessiion

The knitting group is a good way to begin the week. The knitters get together to work on a variety of projects, discuss the affairs of the day and enjoy a cup of coffee. You do not need to be an expert to join this group. Knitters who have a basic knowledge of knitting are welcome. Depending on skill level, some of the items we have worked on are sweaters, socks, mittens, fingerless gloves, hats, hats for charity, baby blankets, doll clothes and even finger puppets for kids.

Quilting and More

Tuesday, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
(except July and August)
$3.00 per sessiion

Lots of quilting projects (small wall hangings, table runners, quilting basics), small projects (tote bags, pocket books). Some of the quilts are donated to charity and others are sold to benefit the Jenks Center. Newcomers are welcome to join and learn—experience with sewing machines is the only requirement.

Coffee and Books

Informal book discussion group open to all. Books are available at the Winchester Public Library and the librarians will gladly assist you in locating an audio or downloadable copy.

Men’s Discussion Group

1st and 3rd Wednesday, 10:40 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
There is no charge.

We discuss today's headlines on TV, the Internet and other media outlets of interest to our members. Opinions are expressed, drawing opposing sentiments, with points and counterpoints spoken. We also discuss historical events that we lived through. Those of us with different backgrounds educate each other on our respective experiences. Many of our comments elicit humorous retorts that lighten the atmosphere and assure the return of our members for another enjoyable good time together.

Science & Technology Discussion Group

2nd and 4th Friday, 10:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.
There is no charge.

Sometimes we are casual about discussing topics that arise from people who are enthusiastic about them at the time, and sometimes we are more formal in having people who propose topics in advance. Examples of topics include climate change, solar power and cyber security. We are not as dry as you might think!

For people who love to sing, join the group and rehearse familiar songs and present them at various events at Jenks throughout the year. Musical scores are provided. “Walk-ins” are welcome, and no auditioning is necessary.

Good for mind and body! The beginners class teaches Basic steps. The advanced class includes basic and much more.

Square Dancing

$3.00 per class

Square dancers listen to instructions then dance them to music. Square Dancing requires application of mental and physical exercise -- a major benefit. Beginners are welcome to join and learn.

Bowling

Enthusiastic bowlers compete, We enjoy an Annual Banquet with prizes for High, Low, and Most Improved Bowler.

Exercise (Total Fitness)

Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
$3.00 per class

This class is designed to improve strength, balance, endurance and flexibility. Bands, dumbbells and ankle weights are provided. All exercises are performed in or behind a chair, and modifications are provided for all levels of ability.

Tuesday, 3:20 p.m. - 4:20 p.m. and Thursday, 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
$5.00 per session

Are you 55+ and tired of the noisy health club scene? We get it and so have created a program using upbeat music with exercises that are challenging yet easily modified for all fitness levels.

Tuesday and Thursday focus on muscle conditioning, strength training, balance and stretching, both seated, standing and on mats (optional).

Dance Fever

Friday, 3:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.

Friday is hopping with “Dance Fever,” a low-impact aerobic workout timed to oldies but goodies and current day tunes.

Yoga

Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
2nd and 4th Thursday, 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
$48.00 per 8-week program; $8.00 for drop-ins

For those not familiar with yoga, it is a series of poses, stretching and breathing exercises, which improve balance, flexibility and strength. We use a gentle approach and incorporate chairs for those needing modification in the poses and for balances. Yoga quiets the mind and you will leave the class with an overall feeling of health and well-being. The yoga group welcomes new members both male and female. Tuesday mornings. Please arrive 15 minutes before ther start of class.

Gentle Yoga

Wednesday, 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This class combines hatha yoga poses, flowing meditative Zen yoga stretches, calming breathing exercises and revitalizing deep relaxation. All fitness levels are welcome. No previous yoga experience required and no sign-up necessary.

Rubber Bridge

Whether you are just starting to play bridge, are renewing your interest or have played for years, you can enjoy a friendly game of Rubber Bridge. This is a very welcoming group. No partner is necessary; in fact, you will change partners every four hands.

Sunday Duplicate Bridge

2nd Sunday of each month, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

A very friendly Sunday afternoon bridge game with fantastic prizes and hospitality. You do not have to bring a bridge partner; we always have several very patient and skillful bridge players who are available for anyone that needs a partner.

Chess

There is no charge.

Join us in a game of chess. All are welcome, novices, experienced players, and everyone in between. Please bring your own board and pieces. No sign- up required.

Cribbage

Wednesday 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
There is no charge.

Cribbage is a card game that uses a peg board with pegs. The idea is to race your opponent around the board by leap frogging your pegs according to the points that you have in your hand. The game dates back to late 17th century England. All levels of skill are welcome. We teach beginners the game. “Walk-ins” are most welcome. Please feel free to join us.

Mah Jongg

We play the American version of the Chinese tile game. You must have some experience. If you're interesterd in learning how to play, you can observe for as long as you need.

Keep Well Clinic

1st and 3rd Thursday of each month, 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
There is no charge.

This clinic features a professional nurse from the town's board of health as well as nurse volunteers to administer blood pressure and weight check-ups.

SHINE Counseling

SHINE is an acronym for “Serving the Health Needs of Elders.” SHINE Counselors are volunteers who provide information, counseling, and assistance regarding health insurance and health benefit options. Our counselor understands the nuances of health insurance and is here to help seniors maneuver their way through the health insurance system.

Technology Workshops

Computer Classes and Support

Days and Times vary

There are a variety of computer, iPhone, iPad, and smart phone workshops, as well as one-on-one problem-solving sessions. Classes for larger groups are free, but when they are private tutorials or small group classes, then a small fee is charged. Some require registering in advance. Others are in a drop-in format, where no advanced registration is required. During the school year, high-school student ‘docents’ occasionally run Friday-afternoon Cyber Cafés in which people can drop in with questions they may have on their smart devices.

2nd Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
There is no charge.

The Library Online offers a rotating series of free, beginner-level workshops dealing with technology. We encourage people to register with the Jenks Center, but “walk-ins” are welcome.
