Week of January 26, 2012 Activities and Programs
Care giving is one of the hardest but most rewarding things you can do. You are not alone.
The Winchester Council on Aging has a Caregivers Support Group,
which meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 10 a.m.
Contact Diane Saparoff, LICSW at 781-721-7136 if you have questions.
From February 6 through April 6, personal income tax returns will be prepared free of charge at the JENKS CENTER,
for taxpayers with low & moderate income. Business and rental property returns are excluded. This program is part of the nation-wide AARP Tax-Aide program.
All returns are prepared by computer and electronically e-filed. Tax sessions will run each Monday, Wednesday & Friday.
Please call 781-721-7136 for an appointment and remember to bring last year’s tax return,
as well as all of the W-2’s and 1099’s and itemized deductions, etc. for 2011.
Please welcome Cindy Mitsakis, RN to the Jenks Center. Cindy is an RN who is pursuing her graduate studies in nursing.
She has chosen the Jenks as her educational home for the Spring semester (Jan – Apr).
Her hope is to gain a better understanding of the Geriatric population.
She will be working with Elaine, the COA nurse, and will be checking blood pressures and running one or two programs for the center.
So, be sure to say hello to Cindy when you see her. She arrives Jan 17th.
Thursday, January 26, 1:00 p.m.: Charade
“Cary Grant stars as Peter, who may or may not be a flimflam man who aids the recently widowed Regina (Audrey Hepburn)
in her mission to recover a fortune hidden by her late husband. But three sinister crooks (Walter Matthau, James Coburn and George Kennedy)
- who’ll stop at nothing - also covet the loot.
A cast of legendary stars has chemistry to burn in director Stanley Donen‘s suave comedy with an Oscar-nominated score by Henry Mancini..”

eleven-year-old Salva becomes separated from his family and must walk with other Dinka tribe members through southern
Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya in search of safe haven.
Based on the life of Salva Dut, who after emigrating to America in 1966, began a project to dig water wells in Sudan.

February 16 at 1:00 p.m.
Everyone knows that the Jenks Center runs on the energy of its volunteers. Look for the action, look for the activities – volunteers are there,
lending their ideas and their support – making things happen! What things do you enjoy at the Jenks?
Chances are – a volunteer started the program – and is keeping it going.
(Maybe you are that volunteer?).
So what better time to tell our volunteers we love them than on Valentine’s Day?
Come to the Pond Room for refreshments, fun, and appreciation.
Of course, most of the planning will be done by volunteers – so everyone can appreciate each other.
At this time we would like to grow our volunteer force. How? – by having each volunteer bring a friend – and possibly a potential volunteer!
Or maybe the friend will be a participant – we still need lots of those.
There will be entertainment – presented by volunteers. By popular demand there will be a repeat performance of the play presented last year,
“The Committee,” - with a mystery cast – of volunteers!
There will be a question and answer session about volunteering-questions you might never have considered – Don’t miss it!
Fridays, starting on February 17 to March 16, at 11:00 am to 12 noon.
The first session is a complimentary session which will introduce participants to the
art of playing hand bells as well as to an improvisational musical experience using percussion instruments.
The group will then help decide which musical activity to pursue for the subsequent
4 week session. Instructor is Rita Wong, MA, MT-BC, LMHC, Health RHYTHMS trained facilitator.
Cost of each class is $5.00. Space is limited. Call to sign up in advance at 781-721-7136.
A new session of computer classes will begin the first week in February.
These classes are geared to those who are new to the computer as well as those who wish to polish existing computer skills and learn new ones.
Classes will be held on Friday from 2:30-4:00 a.m. Cost is $60.00 for the series of 6 classes.
Classes are open to residents of surrounding communities as well as Winchester residents.
For more information call the Jenks Center, Phone: 781-721-7136

Spread the word, get your friends together, and come down to the Jenks on February 10 for a swinging night of music.
We have invited The Entertainers, a well-known band with a large following in New England. Those who know them love their music.
They will serve up some great sounds, and we will serve treats and provide a wine and beer bar.
Glide across the floor and listen to your favorite music, old classics, swing tunes, line dances,
Latin and current favorites for your dancing pleasure.
Couples, bring your sweetheart. Singles, bring a friend, or come alone. (Men, you too!)
Tickets to this event are $15 per person, and are available at the Center.
We ask that you get tickets in advance, so that we can plan and provide enough food for everyone.
You may call the Center at 781-721-7136 to reserve tickets and tables. Join us for an enjoyable evening!

Thursday, March 1
Mark the date. Put on those reading glasses. Get ready for the Jenks Center Book Group’s first meeting on Thursday, March 1.
The Coffee and Books Group will meet on the first Thursday of each month from 10-11:00 a.m. in the Conference Room.
We are delighted that Ann Wirtanen, Winchester Public Library’s Director, will be our facilitator.
Ann has chosen Abraham Verghese’s Cutting for Stone as the subject for discussion at the March 1 meeting.
The title for the April meeting is A Paris Wife, a novel by Paula Mc Lain about Ernest Hemingway and his first wife,
Hadley. Members will recommend the titles for subsequent meetings. Books will be available at the Winchester
Library one month before each meeting.
No long term commitment is necessary. Just come, meet friends and discuss some great books over coffee.
Tuesday, February 7 10:30 a.m.
Back by popular demand!
This is an all new reprise of the 2008 CHOCOLATE program led by Lora Brody with Susan Schwartz that everyone at the Jenks Center remembers fondly.
Chocolate is a universal love - delicious, historic and now recognized as healthful as well!
In this program we will talk a bit about chocolate manufacturing and history, what makes a chocolate bar delicious,
and maybe best of all, we will taste a variety of chocolates.
In this way you will learn what chocolate best suits your palate and which chocolates to use in your cooking and baking.
A quick and easy treat using chocolate will also be demonstrated.
These programs are presented by the Education Committee of the Winchester Seniors Association and are
supported by a grant from the John and Mary Murphy Educational Foundation
Presented by Deborah Moscoso
Thursday, February 23, 10:30 a.m.
This talk is about the Romantic period of music and why it is labeled “romantic”. The term “romantic” has many different connotations.
For most people, romantic has something to do with love, yet many songs of this period spoke instead about death and despair.
Certainly this is not the usual thing we think about when we use the term “romantic.” In addition, sanitary conditions .
were non-existent and there was tremendous poverty. What is so romantic about that?
So we will look at what we mean when we say “romantic” and why this period got this designation.
When we speak of the Romantic period we also must consider its musical innovations.
As we walk through this period, we will see what they were,
particularly in the music of Schubert, Berlioz, Weber, Verdi, Wagner, Puccini and Chopin.
These programs are presented by the Education Committee of the Winchester Seniors Association and are
supported by a grant from the John and Mary Murphy Educational Foundation
