About the Event
Join John Clark for a presentation on the History of Feminism in Music (1875 to 1975). Learn how this 100-year historyplayed a vital part in the American women's struggle for equal status and equal rights. John will talk about how it all began in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with the music of women's suffrage and labor strikes; the early songs of female independence associated with the "flappers" and the brash and bold blues singers of the Roaring Twenties and songs from World War II's Rosie the Riveter to feminist anthems like I'm a Woman and I Am Woman.Â
Sponsored by a generous grant from the John and Mary Murphy Educational Foundation.
