About the Event
Recently Ruth Lieberherr authored and illustrated a children’s picture book titled The Boy Without a Name based on the life of her father who was one of the “Verdingkinder”, small children taken away from their mothers and made to work as indentured servants in Switzerland in the 20th Century. This movie presents the story of an illegitimate orphan child, 12-year-old Max, who is given by the local minister to the Bösiger family, who own a mountain farm. Max's initial hope of finally finding a loving home is brutally shattered. The farmer and his wife treat Max like livestock, and their son Jacob humiliates and abuses him. Only the local teacher notices the child suffering on the farm. Based on the lives of hundreds of verdingkinder, director Markus Imboden presents an often disturbing, but moving story of survival and the need of love and respect. Contains English subtitles.
