Many modern folks grew up hearing stories from the Bible and have gotten to know some tales pretty well, such as the episodes of Noah’s Flood, David versus Goliath, and the crossing of the Red Sea. Yet most people are unaware that the stories they’re familiar with aren’t the only “biblical-sounding” stories that were written. In fact, there are dozens of noncanonical scriptures from ancient Israel—tales about some of these familiar characters such as David, Moses, Noah, and Jesus, along with many other new people. Why do these stories exist? If they were written by ancient Israelites, why didn’t they make it into the Bible? At what point did the Israelites decide that they had enough books and closed the canon? Who were the people who made these decisions?
