About the Event

John Clark will highlight some of the most popular music of the war years (1914-1918) with audio and video clips. Listen to British songs like It's a Long, Long Way from Tipperary and Pack Up Your Troubles, that were popular prior to American involvement. Then, as events began to draw us into this "war to end all wars", opposing viewpoints were expressed in popular songs, like the pacifistic I Didn't Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier and the militaristic Wake Up, America!  You will also listen to songs about how American life had changed after the war, like How You Gonna Keep 'Em Down on the Farm and I've Got My Captain Working for Me Now. Featured artists include Vernon Dalhart, Eddie Cantor, Billy Murray, Henry Burr, and Peerless Quartet.

Sponsored by the John and Mary Murphy Foundation.
