About the Event
The Vietnam War, one of the most important events in 20th century American history, has been examined from several viewpoints: political, participants, societal impacts at the time and moving forward. This class will examine this war through literature by reading two war novels: The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien and The Sorrow of War by Bao Ninh. Each account was written by war veterans shortly after the war ended: one an American, the other a North Vietnamese. Using a discussion format, participants will gain a greater understanding of what the war was like for the fighting soldiers and its impact on them after they returned home. Readings from the books provide the basis for discussion over the four weeks, starting with The Things They Carried. Class members will also receive additional information through a few handouts about topics raised in the novels. Space limited.  Class meets on Thursdays from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
Class Dates: April 2, 9, 16, 23. Cost for 4 classes: $40.
