About the Event
Join us for a sneak preview as the Tufts University Opera Ensemble performs operatic scenes from two new, still evolving chamber operas: The Nightingale and the Rose and The Happy Prince, composed by its Music Director, Thomas Stumpf and staged by Director Carol Mastrodomenico. Â The librettos are adapted from two of Oscar Wilde's exquisite fairy tales, which include sacrifices reflecting a genuine love for humanity. Staging involves the challenge of creating two very different worlds: a beautiful meadow complete with trees and animals (all of whom sing!); and a town square dominated by the golden statue of the Happy Prince, who comes alive at night when a Swallow visits him. The Tufts Opera consists of undergraduate and graduate students, both music and non-music majors. By graduation, they have gained confidence in acting and singing opera. A wonderful annual event not to be missed. Sponsored by a grant from the John and Mary Murphy Educational Foundation.Â
