About the Event

Join Dermot Whittaker the President of the Schwamb Mill Preservation Trust. Inc, for a presentation on the history of The Old Schwamb Mill. It is a picture frame manufactory that has operated along Arlington's Mill Brook since 1864. The illustrated talk will examine questions about the Mill's history, the nature and reach of its frame business. Its workers and their working lives. We'll look at the evidence available in the Mill's business records, its modified walls and foundations, public records, and oral histories. And learn how the owners evaluate and adopt new technologies such as steam engines, turbines, electric motors, telephones. Dermot Whittaker has interests in American history, management of collections and archives, and creation of exhibits and public programs. He also designs databases to give museums, historical societies, and other institutions better access to the information in their collections. Dermot has a Master of Arts in Teaching from Fitchburg State College.

Sponsored by a generous grant from The Cummings Foundation.
